FPL Points Scoring System Explained
Understanding how FPL points are awarded is the foundation of every good transfer decision. Here is the complete breakdown for the 2025/26 season.
Appearance points
Every player earns points just for playing. You get 1 point for appearing (1-59 minutes) and 2 points for playing 60 minutes or more. This is why high-minute players have a reliable points floor.
Minutes played
| Action | GKP | DEF | MID | FWD |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Playing up to 60 minutes | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| Playing 60+ minutes | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2 |
Goals and assists
Attacking returns are where the big hauls come from. Goalkeepers and defenders earn the most per goal because they score so rarely, but midfielders remain the sweet spot for FPL because they score more frequently while still earning 5 points per goal.
Attacking returns
| Action | GKP | DEF | MID | FWD |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Goal scored | 6 | 6 | 5 | 4 |
| Assist | 3 | 3 | 3 | 3 |
Why midfielders are king
Midfielders get 5 points per goal (vs 4 for forwards) AND earn 1 point per clean sheet. That dual earning potential is why premium midfielders like Salah consistently top the overall points table. Many attacking midfielders in FPL play as forwards in real life, giving you forward output with midfielder scoring.
Clean sheets and defensive points
Clean sheets are awarded when the opposing team fails to score while your player is on the pitch for at least 60 minutes. If a player is subbed off before 60 minutes and the team concedes afterwards, the player still gets the clean sheet. If they are on the pitch when a goal goes in, they lose it regardless of later events.
Defensive returns
| Action | GKP | DEF | MID | FWD |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Clean sheet | 4 | 4 | 1 | 0 |
| Every 3 saves (GKP only) | 1 | - | - | - |
| Penalty save | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 |
| Every 2 goals conceded (GKP/DEF) | -1 | -1 | 0 | 0 |
Bonus points (BPS)
After every match, the three best performers receive bonus points: 3 for the highest BPS score, 2 for second, and 1 for third. The Bonus Points System (BPS) is calculated from a range of on-pitch statistics, not just goals and assists.
Key BPS actions (simplified)
Bonus point tips
Defenders who keep clean sheets are heavily rewarded in BPS. A centre-back with a clean sheet and a few clearances can earn 3 bonus without any attacking returns. Forwards need goals or assists to earn bonus because they lose BPS for missed chances and being dispossessed.
Cards and negative points
Deductions
| Action | GKP | DEF | MID | FWD |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Yellow card | -1 | -1 | -1 | -1 |
| Red card | -3 | -3 | -3 | -3 |
| Own goal | -2 | -2 | -2 | -2 |
| Penalty miss | -2 | -2 | -2 | -2 |
A red card removes all clean sheet points. If a player gets a straight red (not a second yellow), they lose 3 points. Two yellows means -1 for the first yellow and -3 for the resulting red, totalling -4.
Captaincy multiplier
Your captain scores double points. Your vice-captain takes over if your captain does not play at all (0 minutes). This makes captain selection the single highest-impact decision each gameweek, typically worth 4-8 points of swing.
Captain strategy
- Form + fixtures is the simplest heuristic. Pick in-form players with easy fixtures.
- Home advantage matters. Top FPL scorers historically score more at home.
- Premium picks are safest. High-ownership captains limit your downside risk.
- Differentials can make or break your rank, especially in the second half of the season.
Tips to maximise points
Prioritise midfielders
They earn 5 per goal, 1 per clean sheet, and many are reclassified forwards. The best value in FPL.
Target bonus magnets
Some players consistently earn bonus points due to their playing style. Centre-backs and set-piece takers over-index on BPS.
60-minute threshold matters
A player who plays 59 minutes gets 1 point. 60 minutes gets 2 points plus clean sheet eligibility. Target nailed starters.
Saves add up for keepers
1 point per 3 saves means keepers facing more shots (weaker teams) can outscore premium keepers through save points alone.
Avoid yellow card magnets
Aggressive players lose 1 point per booking and lose BPS. Over a season, this compounds into a meaningful points gap.
